WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE TOTAL COVERAGE ON YOUR AUTO INSURANCE POLICY
May people say they have full coverage on their cars. What does that mean? Does it mean that your car is covered for all possible damages and injuries? NO! Full coverage does not mean total coverage. It typically means you have additional coverage along with the mandated liability coverage. There are several coverages to insurance policies. I will list each and give a quick explanation at to what each covers.
Liability Coverage- This pays for property damage and injuries you cause to someone else in an accident. It will not cover injuries and property damage of your car.
Uninsured/Under Insured (UM/UIM) Coverage-This covers injuries and property damages to car when you are hit by an uninsured driver, or when the insurance coverages of the person at fault is not enough coverage to pay your property damage and/or injuries.
Collision Coverage- This covers your property damage if your car is involved in an accident regardless of who is at fault.
Comprehensive Coverage-This cover property damage to your car for incidents other than an auto collision, such as, flooding, theft, vandalism, etc…
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)- This will cover medical payments, loss wages, etc, related to an auto collision. This is the best coverage for medical bills reimbursement.
Medical Pay (med pay)- also covers medical payments, but it is always off-set by what you receive from your injury claim. This is the worse coverage for medical bills. Insurance want to sell you this coverage instead of PIP, by saying it’s the same coverage but cheaper, but it is not. Insurance knows they will never actually have to pay this coverage, because it is off-set by all other coverages. I never recommend getting this coverage, get PIP!
As you can see each coverage protects you from different events that can leave you without a car and without recourse to paying your medical bills. I recommend getting all the coverage, except MED Pay. “People are driving without insurance” please protect yourself and your family by getting the coverage you need for your car!
